"I see..." Blue replied, accepting his responsibility of the situation.  "Can I ask you something...?  Err...how much did you see?"
"I saw the whole thing while I was patrolling the border," Rubescent explained.  "You two came out of nowhere, and I was all the way at the edge when it happened.  The first thing I did when I got back was tell Wildfire."  He gestured to the horse with long black mane who was scolding Scarlet.
    "Then...where were their guards...?"
The amber-eyed pegasus tensed.  While Blue hadn't spotted any on the other side, he also never noticed Rubescent in the distance.  Seeking either of them out was the last of his worries at the time.  If his uncle had been as attentive as he claimed, surely he would've seen the guards if they were there.
Before the other stallion could answer, Scarlet raised her voice with frustration.  "If they wanted us dead, why hadn't they killed me earlier?"
Her mother was equally flustered.  "Luck--that's all there is to it.  You were at the wrong place at the right time, so you got away.  But what you did put you and your cousin in danger.  Why can't you just listen to me for once?"
It was hard not to overhear them.  Blue understood now that both himself and Scarlet were to blame.  He swore to Rubescent he'd take charge if something like that happened again, and now Wildfire was trying to make sure it wouldn't.
"That wasn't really what was bothering you, though, was it?" his uncle went on, changing the subject after briefly listening in on his daughter's boisterous conversation.  When the younger stallion gave a sight nod, he said, "Tell me what's wrong."
"I wasn't lying earlier...  I really don't know what's wrong.  I thought it was stress from not helping Scarlet, but I realize I've been really on edge lately.  Every time I pinpoint the reason, it eludes me," Blue vented.  "I draw a blank and then try to fill it in with other things that only worry me more..."
The reddish pegasus suddenly looked a bit sympathetic.  "You know...I'm going inland tomorrow.  Would you like to join me?"
"Inland?  I haven't been there since I was a colt..."
"That's why I'm offering.  Visiting your birthplace might help you with your troubles."
    "...Are we allowed to go?"
"I have to talk with Titian, so of course I'm allowed.  By extension, you are too.  Are you with me?"
"Y-yeah!"  It bothered Blue that Rubescent hadn't answered him about the guards, but this more than made up for it.
"Alright.  I'll wake you up first thing in the morning."

The smell of blood tainted the air, but that wasn't why Blue was cowering behind his mother.
A golden-brown pegasus had approached them, wearing a look of betrayal.  "Cerise...how could you...?" he whispered.
"It just...happened..." the mare answered with exhaustion weighing down her voice.
The stallion shook his head, the action of denial swaying his reddish-colored mane to and fro.  "Who was he...?  What about Cerulean?"
Blue couldn't tell if she was ashamed or just being stubborn.  Whatever the case, Cerise didn't say anything more.
"Don't tell me...you were lying to me...this whole time..."  Angered by her silence, he reared up as if to trample one of them...or both.
That sparked a rush of terror in the mare.  "Leave her alone!"

Blue whinnied, frightened, and walked backward on his hind legs in order to stay balanced on them.  He nearly fell over before he realized it had just been a dream.
The sun was barely within sight over the trees surrounding their home.  A few members of the herd were startled awake from his sound.
Cerise galloped over to him.  "What happened?!"
Embarrassment heated the skin under his coat.  "N-nothing!  It was--it was a mouse.  That's all.  I...thought it was something worse."
"You scared me half-to-death," she sighed.
Blue looked away.  His memory of the dream was already fragmenting.  He held onto the clearest piece he could.  "Who is Cerulean...?"
His mother blinked with surprise.  "Cerulean was an old friend of mine...  I haven't kept in touch with him since we moved here.  Maybe you can say 'hi' for me when you go inland today."
Blue opened his mouth to ask something more, but by then the remnants of his dream were gone.
Next:  Dreams ~Chapter 1, Part 5~    "Why don't you come with us and say 'hi' to him, yourself?" Blue suggested.
His mother retreated a step, fear flashing within her eyes for just a second.  "No, it's okay...  You know Titian and I don't get along."
"You ready?" Rubescent said, landing right between his sister and nephew.
"When you are," the other stallion answered.
As the two began to leave, Cerise called to her son, "If things get too heated, come straight back here.  Okay?"
Blue acknowledged her with a flick of his tail, although he wasn't sure how heated would be considered too much so.  He supposed he'd have to go with his gut on the matter.  If that failed, his uncle would be there to correct him.
It was a direct route from the out- to the inland, but it was also a long one.  Even though they could fly over it in minutes, it was more respectful and less threatening this

Previous:  Dreams ~Chapter 1, Part 3~    Blue left his cousin and walked to the southeastern side of the prairie where he lowered his head to graze, even though he wasn't hungry.  The cause may be stress, boredom, or a combination thereof.  All he knew for sure was that, while eating, he would be left alone out of respect.
He closed his reddish-brown eyes and tried to clear his head.  The sound of his own chewing started to grate on his nerves.  With a growl of frustration, he pulled away from the grass.
"I told you, it was an accident!" Scarlet's shout carried over from a fair distance away.  Blue turned to see that her mother--a black horse--was giving her an earful.  Did she decide to tell her parents after all?  "I can't go back and change it, so what do you want me to do?"
"I'm just telling you to be more careful in the future," the dark mare shouted back.
Blue faced away again, not wanting to eavesdrop.
